1 minute read

On Thursday morning, President Donald J. Trump met with President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine in one of his many bilateral meetings with foreign leaders at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). President Trump commended President Poroshenko on domestic reforms promoting economic growth and enhancing Ukraine’s defense capability and urged him to do more.

The President recommended that President Poroshenko continue working to eliminate corruption and improve Ukraine’s business climate. Before the bilateral meeting, President Poroshenko mentioned the increased number of American companies in the Ukrainian market.

“The turnover between the United States and Ukraine during the last seven months increased 2.5 times because of the implementation of our agreement [to improve international tax compliance]…creating hundreds of thousands of jobs both in Ukraine and the U.S.,” President Poroshenko said.

“That’s a story that is pretty untold, but I think you’ll see it more and more,” President Trump responded. “…They see a tremendous potential there, so take good care of them.”

The two presidents also discussed strategies to achieve peace in Eastern Ukraine.
