Melania Trump embarked on her first solo overseas trip as First Lady when she attended the Invictus Games in Toronto on Saturday. While at the games, she met with both the United Kingdom’s Prince Harry of Wales and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The First Lady led the Presidential delegation of about 100 athletes to the games, an international, multi-sport event founded by Prince Harry of Wales where wounded armed service members and veterans compete in various sporting events. The event pays tribute to the fighting spirit of the men and women who have given so much for their country, sacrificing their lives to keep us safe.
The games began when Prince Harry gave an emotional speech at the opening ceremony on Saturday. “Invictus is about the dedication of the men and women who served their countries, confronted hardship, and refused to be defined by their injuries,” stated the Prince, who founded the games in 2014 specifically for wounded, injured, and sick armed services personnel.
The first events featured at the Invictus Games were wheelchair tennis and a driving challenge, but throughout the rest of the week, athletes will compete in events including powerlifting, sitting volleyball, cycling, wheelchair rugby, swimming, and archery, as well as various others.
“You have given so much for your country. You truly are our heroes,” said First Lady Melania Trump to the athletes representing the United States. “Take that fighting spirit that I know you have and bring home the gold.”
