Tomas J. Philipson of Illinois will be appointed as a Member of the Council of Economic Advisers. Dr. Philipson is an economist who holds the Daniel Levin Chair in Public Policy at The University of Chicago and is the Director of the Health Economics Program of The Becker Friedman Institute. Dr. Philipson previously served as the Senior Economic Advisor to the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration and the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Dr. Philipson has twice received the Kenneth Arrow Award of the International Health Economics Association and was a co-founder of the consulting firm Precision Health Economics LLC. Dr. Philipson holds a BS in mathematics from Uppsala University and a PhD in economics from The University of Pennsylvania.
