2 minute read

President Donald J. Trump met with President Emmanuel Macron of France Monday, the first day of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City. Prior to their meeting, President Trump expressed his appreciation for President Macron’s friendship and his interest in continued cooperation.

“He’s doing a terrific job in France.  He’s doing what has to be done,” the President said. “He’s respected by the French people, and I can tell you he’s respected by the people of the United States.”

The two leaders discussed how to promote peace and implement counter-terrorism strategies in the Middle East in a manner consistent with American and French security interests. President Trump and President Macron exchanged views on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for Iran, which restricts Iran’s nuclear program and ensures that it will be exclusively peaceful. Both countries share an interest in curtailing Iran’s destabilizing activities in the region, and President Trump offered increased United States assistance in combatting terrorism in the Sahel region of Africa.

North Korea has been a central issue of the 72nd General Assembly, and President Trump and President Macron discussed potential strategies to address the escalatory behavior demonstrated by the North Korean regime, as well as unfair Chinese trade practices. Additionally, they discussed ways to exercise environmental responsibility while promoting economic growth for both the United States and France.
